Back to Nature

Whether she’s mowing grass, raking leaves or shoveling snow, Susan Kelley is at her happiest when she’s outdoors.

cardiac surgery 1“I love yard work,” said Kelley, 58, of Lancaster. “Fall is my favorite time of the year. I love decorating for the holidays.”

Getting to spend countless hours outdoors isn’t something Kelley takes for granted. Last spring, she underwent minimally invasive mitral valve repair surgery at Fairfield Medical Center after daily chest pain made it impossible for her to do the things she enjoys.

“Once I had surgery, I wasn’t having any more pain at all,” she said.

Kelley’s surgery was performed by Dr. José Norberto, medical director of cardiac surgery at FMC. Dr. Norberto performs minimally invasive valve surgery – aortic, mitral and tricuspid – as well as traditional open-heart surgery.

Dr. Norberto said minimally invasive valve surgery offers many advantages for the patient, including a much smaller incision of 2.5 inches. Patients also are discharged and able to return to work more quickly.

Kelley said her chest pain began shortly before she was diagnosed with a prolapsed mitral valve in 1999. In late 2012, the pain became more frequent.

“It got to the point where I was having trouble breathing when I was going up and down steps and when I was working,” Kelley said. “I had to give up doing yard work. My daughter did it for me.”

cardiac surgery 2Kelley was admitted to the hospital, where an echocardiogram revealed a severe leak in her mitral valve. She was referred to Dr. Norberto, who performed the surgery on March 18. By April 27, Kelley was back to her job at Anchor Hocking – and back in the yard.

Dr. Norberto trained in minimally invasive valve surgery during his fellowship at Ohio State. He trained at Mount Sinai Medical Center in Miami, Florida with Dr. Joseph Lamelas, a leading authority in minimally invasive cardiac surgery. Dr. Norberto and his team also trained at Toledo Hospital under the direction of Dr. Michael Moront.
