Outpatient Nutrition Services

Outpatient Nutrition Services are offered by registered, licensed dietitians at Fairfield Medical Center for individuals wanting to improve their health through better nutrition.

Dietary programs can be designed on an individual basis to meet each client’s personal needs. Services range from basic nutrition education to the development of a diet based on a particular health need.

General Nutrition Programs

  • Weight Loss: A meal plan will be developed based on your personal goals, lifestyle, nutrient and caloric needs. Continued follow-up is available for on- going support.
  • Pediatric Nutrition: Normal nutrition needs and feeding practices will be discussed. Family consultation is encouraged when dealing with childhood obesity. The dietitian will provide support and direction in developing a nutrition plan for your child’s needs.
  • Weight Gain: When you are trying to gain weight, or you have a poor appetite, it is important to choose high calorie, high protein foods. The dietitian will create a meal pattern to help you reach your weight goals.

Diagnosis-based Nutrition Programs

  • Diabetes: The dietitian will review your daily food intake in relation to recommendations. Meal plans based on the American Diabetes Association guidelines will be individualized to meet your lifestyle and nutrient needs.
  • Hypoglycemia: (Low Blood Sugar): Acceptable blood sugar levels can be reached through meal timing and proper food choices. A meal plan will be designed to help you reach blood sugar control.
  • Hypertension: (High Blood Pressure): Weight reduction is an important for hypertension. Low sodium intake may also help lower your blood pressure. The dietitian will review your current intake and make suggestions on how to reduce your calories and sodium.
  • Heart Disease: Heart healthy eating can be tasty and easily incorporated into your lifestyle. A meal pattern utilizing a greater variety of foods with healthier fats and lower sodium choices will be individualized for you.
  • Kidney Failure: A diet will be individualized for those who may or may not be on dialysis. The dietitian will review sources of sodium, potassium, phosphorous and protein and develop a meal plan based on your situation.

Women’s Nutrition Programs

  • Pregnancy and/or lactation: During pregnancy or lactation, nutritional needs are accelerated. The dietitian will help you identify your nutrient needs and practical ways to meet them.
  • Gestational Diabetes: Controlling blood sugar levels while pregnant reduces risk to both mother and baby. A specialized meal plan to meet both pregnancy and diabetes needs will be developed.

Appointments

Those who require counseling due to a specific condition need a referral from a physician. Your physician will be asked to provide medical information to ensure that you, your physician, and the dietitian are working as a team. Fees will be billed through Fairfield Medical Center, and may be covered by your health insurance plan.The dietitians are located at Fairfield Medical Center’s Dietary department. Appointments for consultation are necessary.
