What Causes Acid Reflux/GERD?

Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is caused by a malfunction of the valve between the stomach and the esophagus. This allows the abnormal reflux of stomach juices that contain acid into the esophagus. The acid irritates the lining of the esophagus causing heartburn and other symptoms.
A number of eating and drinking habits are well known as triggers for acid reflux, but there are also additional situations that contribute to the flare ups.

Other lifestyle contributors to Acid Reflux and GERD may include the following:
-Alcohol
-Being overweight
-Consuming certain foods, such as citrus, chocolate, fatty, and spicy foods
-Caffeine
-Overeating
-Smoking
